The ASBMB commends the Senate appropriations committee for taking a vital first step is marking up and passing a modest increase of $400 million to the budget of the National Institutes of Health for fiscal year 2026. The committee passed the Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill by a vote of 26-3, emphasizing the strong bipartisan support for scientific research.

In addition, the committee included language that would prohibit the use of funds from this appropriations bill to increase the proportion of multi-year NIH grants and language requiring agencies to maintain enough staff to support their responsibilities. These efforts will strengthen our competitive edge in driving innovation and continue to drive cures for the most pressing health challenges of our time.

The ASBMB is encouraged by steadfast, bipartisan support for scientific research and applauds Senate leadership for taking this important step to sustaining our thriving research enterprise. As we’ve said before, the U.S. research enterprise needs predictable and sustained funding for its key science agencies to take full advantage of the scientific progress that drives new treatments and therapies, enables U.S. global leadership and fuels the power American economic engine in research. This is the first step towards moving towards that goal and we welcome the opportunity to continue working with key political leadership to better the health and lives of Americans across all fifty states.
